June Book Haul

Hello lovely! I have been looking at buying some sequels and new books for a while now, and yesterday I finally went on a trip to get some of them. Here’s the stack:

  1. Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare (Finally reading a Shadowhunters book. Wish me luck!)
  2. The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jaqueline Kelly
  3. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern (I’ve been waiting forever to read this one)
  4. Circus Mirandus by Cassie Beasley (Circus!!! Need I say more?)
  5. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
  6. The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine (I’ve read one other of her Ravenspire novels so we’ll see how this one goes)
  7. The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon
  8. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell (The cover is so cute! I really like this edition)
  9. Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo
  10. Thunderhead by Neil Shusterman
  11. The Wicked King by Holly Black
  12. Everland by Wendy Spinale (cheese and crackers the cover is so pretty I’m in love)

I have read Everland by Wendy Spinale in the past (but didn’t own it), as well as Circus Mirandus by Cassie Beasley (my family owns a different edition and I wanted this one for myself). Several of the others are sequels to books I’ve recently read (Thunderhead by Neil Shusterman, The Wicked King by Holly Black, and Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo). The others are all books from my TBR or recommendations from friends.

So far I’ve only started Fangirl. I have heard mixed opinions about this book and decided I should read it and decide for myself. Right now I’m not very impressed; I’m about halfway through the book. The plot and characters are decent, and Cath’s personal struggles are fairly relatable for me, but the amount of language kinda took me by surprise. It’s not that I don’t read books with swear words in them, but honestly, they say f*ck every other page and it’s distracting. I also find it unnecessary as it doesn’t really add anything to the plot. In my opinion, people usually use swear words to try and be eDgY and make their characters “mature” or “rebellious”. I just don’t like the vibe they give to the book. I also really don’t appreciate the number of times she uses the name Jesus or Jesus Christ as a swear word. As a Christian, it makes me uncomfortable, and detracts from the story. Full review to come!

I’m very excited to read the sequels I got (especially Thunderhead) so I can review those series/trilogies as well. While I didn’t particularly love Shadow and Bone or The Cruel Prince, I found them entertaining and think the worlds they’re set in are worth revisiting. There’s quite a bit of hype around both as well, so I want to see if they live up to it, even if I wasn’t completely taken in by the first books.

Hopefully I will eventually be reviewing all of these as I do the Reviewing My Bookshelf series, but that’s it for today, lovelies! Have you read any of these books? What did you think of them? What books have you gotten this month?

P.S. I have another Sunshine Blogger nomination I’ve been waiting to post for like a month, so be looking out for that!

Have an adventurous day!

Love,

I always have a book in my hands or zipped up in my bag. I'll probably read through the apocalypse and not realize what's happened.

  1. Nice haul!
I’ve heard the shadow hunter books are a little inappropriate, so I doubt I’ll ever read those. A lot of the other books are on my TBR though! The first Red Queen book was REALLY good. Unfortunately I quit reading the series, but the 1st 2 books were awesome.
I think I might give Shadow and Bone a try. I wasn’t interested in them at first, but it actually seems interesting now. We’ll see!

    1. I’ve heard mixed things about different shadowhunter books. The Infernal Devices Trilogy was the most highly recommended to me, so I think that’s the only one I’ll read. Let me know if you decide to read S&B! I liked her Six of Crows series better so far, but some people like this one more.

      1. Due to lockdown, I haven’t bought new books this year. But I’m definitely going to read The night circus.
Red Queen is on my tbr.
I loved The Sun is also a star by Nicola Yoon, I hope you enjoy reading it.
